Earlier today, Campolindo improved its head-to-head against Acalanes to 1-1 after defeating our boys 6-3. Tough losses can build character, sting, and intensify the focus on improving skills to prevent a reoccurrence. In this case, I think it’s all the above. We knew going in that it would be a tough match; however, we did not go down without a fight. Three matches were decided by three setters and there were several close sets.
Weather-wise, it was a great day for tennis. Campo has six courts so all singles matches started things off. First off was #2 Shah who again ran into Wirstrom, whose UTR exceeds 8. Saaj is a 5.5, so this equated to a very one-sided match. Saaj did salvage a game in the second set but ran into a very tough opponent. Next off was #3 Sze You Chen who split a couple of breadsticks (6-1 sets) against Adams. It was a closely-contested third set tiebreaker and Yoyo pulled out the 10-7 win. It was good to see Yoyo free swinging and going after his shots. Great match! #5 Shin finished next and also split sets. Miller was simply too consistent in the decider and got the win over Kyle 10-5. #4 Hoeberechts came off the courts next. This was a rematch from the first time we played Campo. Last time, Bora defeated Kirchner in a third set tiebreaker. This time Kirchner returned the favor getting Bora 10-4 in the decider. The last singles match to finish was #6 Taylor. Sammy will be the first to admit he had his chances in this match. A few less unforced errors and a few more put aways and the results are flipped. Unfortunately, Levin won 7-5, 6-4. At this point: Campolindo 4, Acalanes 2.
To pull off the win, Acalanes had to sweep the doubles. We came up a little short. #1 Fisher/Marshall looked dominant until the 6-1, 5-2 mark. Oehlschlager/Williamson tried to creep back in, but Cameron and Blake slammed the door shut at 6-4. That would be our last win of the afternoon. #2 Gorham/Ammerman played a solid match against seniors Lindsey-Renton/Hughes but just could not win the critical points towards the end of each set and went down 6-3, 6-4. This was their first match together and there were a lot of long points and fun points to watch. #3 Todi/Roberts closed out the show with a 6-3, 6-3 loss to sophomores Milman/Rojas. There were also a lot of good points and close games, but the deuce points went the way of Campolindo and it made the difference.
The other league match today went to Northgate who defeated Miramonte 5-4 – makes things a little interesting. The current DAL-Foothills league standings: #1 Miramonte (3-1), tie #2 Campo (2-2) and Northgate (2-2), #4 Acalanes (1-3). The team has to focus on getting wins next week. Tuesday we are home against Miramonte. Thursday we are away at Northgate. Anything can happen at this point, but we can’t control any of that. We can only put in our best effort to close strongly.
Our match Tuesday against Miramonte is being threatened by the high probability of rain. As each day progresses, the chances of rain increase. Because this is our last home league match, it is typically senior night when we celebrate the last home league match of our seniors. Because there is a lot of planning and food involved, we have decided to move our senior recognition to the following Tuesday, April 28, when we play Bishop O’Dowd on our home courts. Because of this change, we will still enjoy food and celebrate our seniors, but we will hold off on senior speeches until our end-of-season banquet. (I hope that helps Tina😊).
To our family members who supported us at Campolindo, we thank you and wish we could have pulled out a big win. It was definitely not due to lack of effort. We congratulate Campo – they were the better team today. On to Miramonte! Go Dons. Coach Rick
