On a beautiful Thursday evening with a backdrop of the sun setting over the bay, the Varsity Girls Lacrosse team hit the road to take on the Piedmont Highlanders. After losing to the Highlanders 15-4 last year, the Dons flipped the script, cruising to an 18-5 victory which pushed their record to an impressive 5-1 on the season.
On offense, the Dons were able to score 10 goals in the first half and 18 in the game using a formula that has proved successful all season, controlling the draw, not turning the ball over, and unselfish play leading to great shots. In one sequence that epitomized the unselfish play, Emily Roberts passed up a free shot to make a great assist to Kelly Reidenbach, and then Kelly returned the favor on the very next play by passing up her own free shot to dish an assist to Emily for the goal.
Grace Colaco led the team on offense, scoring a double hat trick on only 7 shots. Emily scored 5 goals (which is called a “Glut”) and dished out a team high four assists. The other goals came courtesy of Kelly’s hat trick, Reese Imrie’s two goals, and goals from Cate Mercier and Kate Beaver. Kate led the team with 5 draw controls, Grace and Reese had 3 each, and Svea Staino and Ella Culbertson had 1 each. In addition to Emily’s assists, Christina Hageboeck had 2, and Cate, Reese, Kelly, and Ximena Espinosa each had an assist. Ximena’s assist to Grace was so good that the goalie didn’t even know where the ball was when she scored.
The defense continued to play well. Although the ball stayed on the Highlander’s side of the field most of the game, when it did get on the Don’s side, Reese Tierney, Grace Eppinger, and the rest of the defense stepped up as they have all season to keep the ball out of harms way. Although the Highlanders didn’t have many shots, Goalie Sara Hession stepped up when needed, including one save off her pads that made such a big thud it could be heard all the way up in the stands.

Come watch the team as they return home to take on undefeated College Park on Tuesday at 7pm
