Acalanes High School freshman soccer team launched its season with an emphatic 5 to 1 win over the Dougherty Valley Wildcats on Thursday in San Ramon. The Dons were led by center midfielder Jonny Rubin who scored 2 goals and was named “Man of the Match” by the coaching staff.
Acalanes controlled possession from start to finish and generated several strong chances throughout the game. The breakthrough came at the 24-minute mark when Striker Nick Siewart finished a clean pass through the middle, slotting the ball into the right corner.
Minutes later, Jonny Rubin made it 2-0 by rising above the defense on a corner and heading the ball past the keeper. Striker Ben Ferber extended the lead to 3-0 when he slipped behind the defense and finished calmly after the goalkeeper was drawn out of position.
Dougherty Valley broke through with a few minutes left in the first half despite the Dons remaining firmly in control. The score at halftime was 3-1.
Acalanes opened the second half with renewed pressure. Rubin struck again, drilling a low liner into the left corner from outside the box. Left winger Keegan Aldridge sealed the match with a powerful right-footed shot.
Acalanes next game is at home this Saturday against Emerald High School at 1pm. Go Dons!
