Now that the fall sports season is coming to a close, I wanted to share some highlights, notable moments and achievements for a team that exceeded expectations–both as a team and for some outstanding individual performances.
Team Highlights:
Overall Record: 12-1 Includes our three pre-season matches
League Record: 9-1 They did not lose a match after the season-opener vs. Miramonte (away)
- Victory over Bishop O’Dowd in open pre-season…a good omen for things to come…
- Split league matches with Miramonte – fierce crosstown rival: Our second match with them at home featured our Lines 1-3 sweeping, all in tiebreakers.
- Prevailed over Campolindo, our other crosstown rival, twice–Home and Away
Freedom Invitational: Overall the team took both first and third places:
- Championship: White Team
- 3rd Place Medalists: Blue Team
Individual Highlights: Two Players with Undefeated Records
Freshman Averly Ammerman: 17-0 Singles. Averly never played below Line 4. Her notable victories included an 8-4 win in the Miramonte season opener, one of our three wins in the 3-6 loss; at our 1st Campolindo match she won 8-3 at Line 2; at the 2nd Campo match, she was dominant in Line 3, winning 8-1 over one of the two senior players on Campolindo’s JV team. At the Freedom tournament, she went 4-0 in three rounds of bracket play + the Semi-Final match vs. Cal High. She gave up only 5 games in those 4 matches.
Junior Carissa Penn: 17-0 (12-0 in Singles and 5-0 in Doubles). At the first Campolindo match she defeated one of their two senior players, this was noteworthy because this clenched our 5-4 victory.
Freshman Kennedy Wilson: 15-2 Singles. After a season-opener loss at Miramonte, she did not lose again until the heartbreaking Semi-Final loss vs. Cal High at Freedom. At Campolindo away, she won 8-4 in Line 3 over one of their two Senior players.
It should be noted that in the 2nd Campolindo match, Averly Ammerman and Kennedy Wilson played both their Senior JV players and won both matches! Averly dominate at 8-1 and Kennedy winning at a close tie-breaker 9-8 (8-6).

Finally, in particular, a special shout-out to the following moms: Jessica Schellinck who stepped up as Team Parent, handling all the TeamSnap communication and coordinating snacks; Cynthia Lee for coordinating carpool assignments; and to Lindsey Ivory, as our unofficial team scribe who posted our results, updates and photos onto the Booster Club website. Each of them was so very helpful–I couldn’t have done this without them. This wrap-up would not be complete without my thanks to Coach Lee Ann – her experience, her knowledge and her understanding of the game as always proved invaluable to this JV program. Special thanks to the Lewis family for hosting our team bonding dinner as well as to the Marshall family for the end of season dinner.
In closing, my sincere thanks to all the parents and families for their support and enthusiasm at matches. This team was characterized by a well-balanced effort up and down the line-up – it was these tremendous players that helped to make this a successful season. The combination of consistently reliable play by our student-athletes plus the enthusiasm of our families contributed to the positive vibe throughout the season. Best wishes to all the families and players and booster supporters through the holidays. Keep playing tennis. It can be a difficult sport at times, but it’s always beautiful. – Coach Gary
