First time in six seasons… the JV Dons came out on top over Campo.
Due to some schedule juggling, it was the third time the Dons had seen Campo in as many weeks. And with a few players missing from his lineup for this home match, Coach Gary had to go through some lineup gymnastics and ended up netting the 6-5 win. (pun intended)
Four players saw singles action. Reed Lusch in Line 1 set the tone with a convincing 8-2 win – his consistent groundstrokes frustrating his opponent. Eddie Leung, Ilai Elbaz and Jack Roberts competed well in Lines 2, 3 and 4, respectively, and faced tough opponents who secured sets for Campo. Lines 2 and 4 were particularly close, with Eddie grabbing 5 games and Jack 6 games.
The coaches agreed to make the match doubles-heavy – with seven lines – and the Dons ended up taking five of them. Moving up to Line 1 for the day, Connor McAndrew and Bryson Trimble nearly pulled a fast one but ultimately fell 6-8. Owen Lee and Cade Yen (Line 2) trailed by a decent margin early but locked in during some tense moments to deliver a thrilling tie-breaker win 9-8 (7-4).
Lines 3 through 6 all went to the Dons. In order, Brandon Fu and Parker Hulst (Line 3) took a back and forth battle at 8-6. Hieu Ho and Colin Wilson put the hammer down 8-2. Tyler Anderson and Conrad Smith kept up their successful partnership and delivered at 8-5. Teddy and Will Mrachek delivered composure and consistency in their 8-2 victory. In Line 7, Cade Krick and Charlie McIlwain delivered strong play but faced an uphill battle and fell 5-8 against Campo’s team that also played in Line 5.
The progress against Campo in past weeks was visible, and Tuesday saw the breakthrough.
Go Dons!
