Exciting Week For Acalanes Boys Golf

The boys played all over the Bay this past week! The Varsity team headed to Stanford (Go Bears – I couldn’t resist!) on Monday, where Durham Vail (Jr), Isaac Topp (Jr), Krish Veluthakkal (So), Oliver Stoneman (Sr), Ryan Weilbach (So), and JP Birdwell (So) represented the Dons in the Sequoia Invitational. The difficult par 70 golf course got the best of the team, finishing 14th out of 20 teams. Isaac Topp shot the low score for the team with an impressive 72 (+2). Durham Vail had the second-lowest score for the Dons with a 78 (+8). Not only did the boys get an all-day release, but they also got some great varsity exposure.

Also on Monday, at the other end of the Bay, the JV squad played in a varsity tournament and came in 2nd! That shows you the strength of the team this year. The boys played at Blue Rock Springs West in Vallejo in the St. Pats – St. Vincent Invitational. Anthony Mullin (Jr), Luca Potts (Sr), Mason Wampler (Jr), Mason Ross (Fr), and William Griffin (Fr) shot an impressive 62 (-9) in the scramble tournament format.

The varsity squad was back at it on Tuesday for a non-league match against Head Royce. Windy conditions on the difficult back 9 at Corica Park South Golf Course didn’t stop the Dons as Sophomores Ryan Weilbach shot a 38 and Krish Veluthakkal shot a 39 leading the team to a 204-217 victory over the Jayhawks.

On Wednesday,  many of the younger players on the JV team headed over to Bridges Golf Club in San Ramon. The fearless squad was led by senior statesman Matthew McCallister (Jr). The young team struggled (and if you’ve played this course, you can relate), but it was a great learning experience for golfers.

But wait, there’s more! Also on Wednesday, the varsity team WON the Silverado Junior Golf Organization Tournament in perfect Napa weather. The Dons won the tournament as a team by 7 strokes and Rocco Stassi (Jr) won the event as an individual shooting an impressive 68 (-4) on the PGA Tour Event course.

Next week, the Dons face off against Miramonte at Contra Costa Golf Club in the first official league match of the season so stay tuned for updates!
