Varsity Softball Splits the Week Behind Strong Pitching and Aggressive Bats

The Acalanes Dons softball team battled through another competitive week, finishing 1–1 behind strong pitching from senior Maya Shoenhair and a lineup that continued to put pressure on opponents.

On Tuesday, Shoenhair delivered a standout performance in the circle, striking out 11 batters and pitching a complete game to lead the Dons to an 8–2 victory over Hercules. The senior ace allowed just one hit and two runs across seven innings while walking three.

The Dons broke the game open in the second inning, erupting for five runs. Avery DeMent started the scoring with an RBI groundout before Shoenhair and Lauren Foster followed with RBI singles. Two additional runs crossed the plate on a Hercules error, giving Acalanes the momentum they would not relinquish.

Offensively, the Dons racked up 12 hits on the day. Foster led the charge with three hits in five at-bats, while Shoenhair and Ella Greenfield also contributed multiple hits. Batting cleanup, June Natal drove in two runs, helping power the Dons’ attack. On the base paths, Acalanes was relentless, swiping eight stolen bases and keeping Hercules on their heels all game.

The Dons returned home Thursday for a rivalry matchup against Las Lomas, but despite out-hitting the Knights 9–4, Acalanes came up short in a 9–5 loss.

Las Lomas struck early, plating two runs in the first inning on a sacrifice bunt and sacrifice fly. They extended their lead in the second inning after an Acalanes error allowed two more runs to score.

Shoenhair once again took the ball for the Dons and battled through seven innings, striking out seven batters while allowing four hits.

At the plate, Lauren Foster and June Natal each collected two hits, while Vanessa Choi and Gabby Huerta each drove in a run for Acalanes.

The Dons will look to bounce back when they host Kennedy on Tuesday, aiming to build on another week of strong pitching, aggressive baserunning, and timely hitting.
