The Acalanes JV Baseball team played well against a tough De La Salle JV team, once again lead by their solid pitching staff, but came up short against the Spartans 7-3 on Tuesday in Lafayette.
De La Salle got on the scoreboard first with two runs in the top of the second inning. But that lead was cut in half when Aiden Jeffery lead off the bottom of the second with a towering home run over the left field fence for the JV Dons first home run of the season.
The Spartans managed to score one run in the top of the third inning and two unearned runs in the top of the fourth. But the Dons battled back in the bottom of the fourth. With one out, Will Feinstein and Aiden Jeffrey walked, putting runners on first and second. Mateo Valenzuela then singled down the left field line to score Feinstein, cutting the Spartans lead to 5-2. After Stone Jaquet walked to load the bases, Jeffrey scored on a wild pitch and the Dons were right back in the game. After four innings, the Dons were within striking distance trailing 5-3.
De La Salle scored an unearned run in the fifth and another run in the sixth to take a 7-3 lead after six innings. Unfortunately for the JV Dons, they were unable to get another hit and ended up losing another close game to bring their record to 2-5-1.
Despite the final score, the JV Dons gave a talented De La Salle JV team all they could handle. The Dons pitchers were able to pitch their way out of jams all afternoon, keeping the score close and putting pressure on the opposing team. Marcus Yakaitis (2 IP, 2 ER), Mateo Valenzuela (2 IP, 1 ER, 1 SO), Will Feinstein (2 IP, 1 ER) and Isaiah Castillo (1 IP, 0 ER) all pitched well for Acalanes and displayed solid control, giving up only one walk the entire afternoon.
At the plate, the JV Dons were lead by Aiden Jeffrey (1-2, 2 Runs, 1 RBI) and Mateo Valenzuela (2-3, 1 RBI).
Next up for the JV Dons will be the Petaluma High School Trojans on Wednesday the 18th at Ken Souza Field.
