Boys Varsity Basketball: Dons Keep Their Cool in Wild Benicia

The Acalanes Dons opened Diablo Athletic League play on Friday night, December 19, earning a hard-fought 69–56 road victory at Benicia in one of the most challenging environments they will face this season.

Benicia’s gym was packed and energetic, with a loud, spirited crowd and an impressive dance team that brought constant noise and pressure, particularly during free throws. The atmosphere was intense from start to finish, making it an excellent early test for the Dons as league play begins.

The challenge was heightened by the absence of Head Coach Bill Powers, leaving the team in the capable hands of assistant coaches Joey Hewitt, Ric Shepard, and Anton Lyons. Hewitt—an Acalanes alum who played under Coach Powers—led the bench with poise and confidence. A former professional player who has competed internationally and the winningest player in Division III college basketball history, Hewitt’s calm leadership helped the Dons stay composed throughout the night.

A Back-and-Forth First Half

The game was tightly contested from the opening tip. Cameron Hood pushed the tempo early, A.J. Hastings knocked down timely perimeter shots, and Gavin Dodge set the tone with physical play on both ends of the floor.

Neither team was able to gain separation in the first half, as Benicia fed off the home crowd and Acalanes responded with toughness and ball movement. A key stretch came in the second quarter, when Bryce Mansour provided tough-nosed, high-energy defense, helping to slow Benicia’s momentum. The teams went into halftime tied 33–33, reflecting the intensity and balance of play.

Turning Point: A Dominant Third Quarter

The game shifted decisively after halftime. Acalanes’ defense tightened, limiting Benicia’s opportunities and controlling the glass, while the offense began to click through unselfish play and strong decision-making. The Dons outscored the Panthers 16–6 in the third quarter, creating the separation they would maintain the rest of the way.

The Dons finished the game with 20 assists, a clear sign of excellent ball movement and team play under pressure.

Standout Performances

Gavin Dodge, a three-year starter, delivered one of the strongest all-around performances of his career:

  • 19 points on 6-of-13 shooting

  • 2-for-4 from three

  • 5-for-6 from the free-throw line

  • Career-high 13 rebounds

  • Team-high 5 assists

A.J. Hastings added 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting, including 4-of-6 from three, along with 3 assists and 3 rebounds.

Despite an off shooting night, Cameron Hood continued to impact the game with 17 points, 3 assists, and consistent pressure on the defense.

Preston Hilsabeck contributed 8 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 assists, while Julian Hood was efficient with 5 points on 2-of-4 shooting. In limited minutes, Shea Stahl delivered a key three-point play, and Jon MacLeod secured an important rebound late in the game.

Closing It Out

With the advantage created in the third quarter, the Dons executed well down the stretch, using disciplined defense, rebounding, and patient offense to secure a 69–56 victory. The win marks a strong start to league play and a testament to the team’s composure, resilience, and unselfish approach.
