Freshman Boys Basketball Defeats Dougherty Valley, 54-36

The Acalanes Freshman Boys opened their season with a strong 54-36 win over Dougherty Valley on Saturday, combining efficient shooting, active defense, and unselfish ball movement,

Acalanes set the tone early with a 16–13 first quarter, then put together a lockdown defensive stretch in the second, holding Dougherty Valley to just two points. Behind that effort, the Dons took a 21–15 halftime lead and never surrendered control.

The offense clicked throughout the afternoon, highlighted by Drew Felder’s efficient 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting and Francesco Cangini’s 11-point performance, which included aggressive drives and key free throws. Tyler Cosso provided a major interior presence, scoring 10 points and grabbing 8 rebounds.

Playmaker Zenai Kaplanes-Jones orchestrated the offense beautifully, finishing with 9 assists and 6 steals, driving a team-wide effort that resulted in 19 assists on 21 made baskets — an outstanding ratio at any level.

Contributions from Bobby Ruhl (5 pts), Jacob Kubalik (5 pts), Eli La Rotonda (3 pts), Tade O’Keeffe (3pts) and Will Palmer (3 pts) helped Acalanes connect on eight made threes, stretching the floor and keeping Dougherty Valley off balance.

A 15–7 push in the fourth quarter sealed the win, showcasing the Dons’ depth, composure, and balanced scoring. It was a complete showing from Acalanes, who played connected basketball on both ends of the floor to secure a convincing season-opening victory.
