Girls Varsity Water Polo Defeats the Giants 15-5

Senior Ella Del Rosario scores the first goal of the game

The Dons welcomes the Redwood Giants under a rather ominous Tuesday afternoon sky. Acalanes won the sprint and Malin Stone sent the ball to Ella Del Rosario for goal #1. Redwood responded on the next play with a nice lob shot to tie the game. Ella got right to work and scored two in a row followed by two more by Finley Graff. The steals were off the chart today from Ella, Anika Rehn, Jayna Guiro, Siena La Rotonda, and Elinor Chen! Junior goalie Adelyn Horciza made one save after another to end the quarter 5-1.

Quarter two started with some great teamwork from Finley Graff to Ella Del Rosario to add two tallies to the scoreboard. The next dynamic duo was from senior Olivia Whipple to freshman Anika Rehn for another Acalanes goal. Sophomore Kylie Kaplan sent a great pass to Finley who sent the ball into the twine and the quarted ended with a great save from Adelyn Horicza and some freshman teamwork from Anika to Jayna to end the quarter 11-3.

The Giants started the second half with a fierce sprint and possession but sophomore Emiko Kuniyoshi snagged the ball back to give Acalanes possession. Several steals, attempted shots, and great blocks by both goal tenders kept the score at a stalemate until the end of the quarter with three in a row from Finley Graff and freshmen Lucy Kerr and Elinor Chen. Redwood had the ball with 10 seconds left in the quarter but Siena La Rotonda had such great defense and an epic shot block that Redwood couldn’t shoot.

The final quarter was a quick one and full of great defense! Redwood won the sprint but Kylie Kaplan stole the ball. An offensive was called on Aca which gave Redwood possession and they were able to score their fifth goal of the game. We had some great attempts by Acalanes, but none found the back of the net. Kylie had another great steal followed by one from Siena La Rotonda. Emiko Kuniyoshi snagged the ball back and had a great shot but Redwood regained possession only to be blocked by Adelyn twice in a row! The final goal of the game came from Siena La Rotonda who slid in to the perfect spot and sent it deep in the cage to claim the win 15-5.
