Varsity Girls Lacrosse Falls to Campo 13-12

The Girls Varsity Lacrosse team hit the road Tuesday on a nice, warm spring evening in Moraga to take on the cross-town rival Campolindo Cougars. Despite holding a lead for most of the game, the Dons fell 13-12 after an unfortunate yellow card (the third one handed out to the Dons on the day) with just under 2 minutes to go that left them down a player and helped the Cougars play keep away to run out the clock.

On offense, Senior Megan Churchill (#15) filled up the stat sheet with 4 goals and 4 assists. Junior Emily Roberts (#22) and Sophomores Grace Colaco (#10) and Catalina Liu (#20) chipped in two goals each, while Senior Lucca DeBiasse (#5) and Junior Reese Imrie (#17) rounded out the scoring, with each netting one goal. Grace took most of the draws and secured 7 of them. Reese Imrie secured 5, and Lucca Debiasse and Catalina Liu each secured 2. Junior Maya Stafford (#32) and Grace had the other assists for the Dons in the book, although I would argue that Junior goalie Sara Hession (#75) should also be given credit for an assist for a long pass downfield to Reese Imrie, who ran it down the rest of the field and scored.

Seniors Claire Zimmerman (#3) and Addie McShane (#30), Junior Eddie Berzansky (#31), and Sophomore Reese Tierney (#21) led the defensive effort. Claire and Reese both had several long runs downfield.  Edie made several spectacular plays on defense, including deflections that likely saved a couple goals. Maya and Grace also had nice steals near the goal.  Sara recorded 11 saves, including a few on free shots and others where the Cougars attackers managed to “cherry pick” to get behind the defense for open shots.

I would like to commend the DJ at the game for playing a good assortment of 80s classics, including Welcome to the Jungle, Eye of the Tiger, and a Beastie Boys song (Fight for your Right?).  Offsetting the good music was the questionable fog horn sound after the Cougars scored each goal, a homage I guess to the San Francisco Giants hitting a home run at Oracle Park, but without the fog.  I digress…
