Boys Varsity Lacrosse take down Miramonte, 11-4

The Dons took to their home field Friday night against Miramonte in the annual Matt Lynn game. Matt was a former Acalanes lacrosse player and JV coach who died in 2009 after a 4 1/2-year battle with brain cancer. In honor of Matt, his family has generously set up scholarships for boys and girls lacrosse players. When Matt was a player, he had a tradition of wearing crazy socks, so the boys were asked to do the same, and they brought Matt’s fun and fighting spirit to the game as they took on district rivals Miramonte.

With two of our starting attack out due to injury, the Dons would have to find some new sparks to get the job done.

The game started with a bang as Jan Korzeniowski struck first for the Dons, quickly followed by a pair of goals from the dynamic Luke Dafferner.  Korzeniowski then added another, setting the tone for a dominant first quarter that ended with the Dons leading 4-1.

The intensity continued into the second quarter, with tough defense from both sides, one goal from the Mats and what seemed like a scoreless quarter from the Dons. However with just 8 seconds left in the half,  Rotundo started off an offensive play with a beautiful assist to by Caleb Mason for a goal with a mere .9 seconds left on the clock which sent the Dons into halftime with a 5-2 advantage. The third quarter saw senior standout Griffin Rotundo find the back of the net, along with another goal from the red-hot Jan Korzeniowski, further extending the Dons’ lead.

The fourth quarter brought even more excitement as Korzeniowski notched yet another goal, followed by a fantastic score from Alex Cortez and a final exclamation point from the relentless Luke Dafferner. Anchoring the stellar team performance was the exceptional play of goalie Kyle Sanftner, who stood tall and denied the Matadors with 15 saves. The rock-solid defense, led by the hustle of Luca Premo and all-around great play of Henry Finegold, proved too much for the Mats, limiting Miramonte to just four goals. It was a great Friday night to be a Don as the team delivered a fine win.
