Tuesday night the Dons faced off against the Ugly Eagles for a thrilling Senior Night matchup, honoring 15 seniors before the opening whistle.
The game got off to a hot start with Grant Condy striking first, followed by a goal from Caleb Mason. Condy found the back of the net again and solid defense and goal protection from senior goalie Val Grossi closed out the first quarter, giving the Dons a 3-2 edge.
The second quarter saw the Dons kick into high gear. Luke Dafferner added one to the tally before senior Griffin Rotundo lit it up with back-to-back goals. Junior attack Jan Korzeniowski kept the momentum going with a sweet goal, and Rotundo wasn’t done yet—he buried another completing a second quarter hat trick before Mason closed out the half with his second goal. The Eagles managed two of their own, but the Dons headed to the break leading 9-4.
The third quarter was a different story. The Dons looked a little out of sync with some dropped passes and struggled to contain a resurgent Eagles offense. The visitors scored three unanswered goals, tightening the game to a narrow 9-7 Dons lead heading into the final frame.
But the fourth quarter belonged to the Dons. Jackson Tseng scored two quick goals to swing momentum back in their favor, followed by another goal from Condy and a laser shot from Dafferner. Griffin Rotundo added some drama as he wowed the crowd (and the refs) and turned a few cross checks into an Academy Award performance. The night ended on a highlight-reel play: a stunning assist from Cortez to Mason, who caught the pass midair and dumped it in, sealing the win with one of the most memorable goals of the season. The final minutes of the game, senior midfielder Simon Appel had a cameo appearance in the goal with one impressive save and senior Nathan Ricci closed out game for the win.
With a 13-3 record, the Dons head into their final regular season game this Friday against Las Lomas. The team looks primed and ready for the postseason.
