It was a sunny Tuesday afternoon in Berkeley and the Dons came ready to play! In the first few minutes of play, Julia Lyons ran from defense, passed to Samantha Swift, who scored a quick goal. Soon after, another great assist from Allie Schofield to Cate Mercier for another goal! Cate Mercier was able to score another one after Berkeley HS defense caused a penalty. Then Eloise Greeson had a beautiful shot and scored. Before the first quarter was over, Cate Mercier was relentless and scored one more to make the score 5-0 Acalanes.
However, Berkeley High came back after the first quarter with more fire and scored quickly. Then Acalanes sophomore Yali Avrahami had a great shot and scored. Berkeley High got some momentum going when we were down a player because of a defensive penalty. Their team scored 3 quick goals, but Cate Mercier was on fire and added 3 more for Acalanes, including one from a Samantha Swift assist.
As coach Steve said, the defense and midis played incredible all game! The tough Acalanes starting defensive team of Maddie Obertello, Ruby Bogan, Molly Jones, and Julia Lyons had several blocks, pickups and assists. The mid field players Allie Schofield, Eloise Greeson, and Ella Culbertson played outstanding defense and supported the attack. Goalies Chloe Lloyd and Persephone Quine made a few important saves. Once again, our team of 32 players enthusiastically cheered each other on and were the most spirited team out there! Everyone got a chance to play in this game and contributed to our team defeating Berkeley High 9-5.
