The varsity softball team improved their record to 6-1 with their sixth straight win last Thursday on home soil. The bats stayed hot and the defense rose to the occasion again in another Don’s victory. This was the third errorless game of the young season for this tight, defensive squad.
The Cougars took the lead in the first inning with two early runs. The girls would have none of that, though. Acalanes grabbed the lead for good with 6 runs in the second inning, followed by 3 in the third and another in the fourth inning for yet another Don’s 10-run rule win after 5 innings.
Senior centerfielder Emme Young got the hit party going with an inside the park home run that drove in 3 runs. Sophomore left fielder Vanessa Choi then tripled and scored on an error to plate another run in the 4 run second inning. Both outfielders had 2 hits and a walk in the game.
The next inning was more of the same for the Dons offense. The girls got on base early and often. The big blow was sophomore third baseman Santana Tamayo’s astounding third grand slam in two weeks knocking in senior second baseman Avery Robb, sophomore first baseman Gabby Huerta and senior catcher/first baseman Esa Orman to give the Dons an 11-2 lead.
Santana Tamayo’s 3rd Grand Slam in 7 games!
Esa also had a nice game, playing a solid first base and recording 2 hits with a run scored and a run batted in. She finished the game behind the plate.
Senior hurler Maya Shoenhair did her thing in the circle, giving up 3 runs, 5 hits, 6 walks and recording 5 strikeouts in 5 innings for the home team.

The Varsity Dons take on the Cougars again in Moraga on Tuesday at 4:30pm. Stay hot girls! Go Dons!
