Varsity Softball Cruises to Fifth Straight Win!

The softball team headed to Fremont on Tuesday to take on the Kennedy Titans.  The Dons used a similar recipe for success with early and timely hitting, great pitching and pretty solid defense in their 6-1 win.

Junior pitcher Maya Shoenhair threw a gem, only allowing 2 hits, 3 walks and no earned runs in a strong 7 inning performance.  The complete game victory pushed the team’s record to 5-1.

The Dons got the party started early when leadoff hitter extraordinaire, Emme Young led off the game with a sharp single up the middle.  She provided the lightning before left fielder Vanessa Choi provided the thunder. On a 3-2 count, Vanessa smoked the ball over the left field fence for a two-run homer.  Her third of the year. Boom goes the dynamite!

Senior first baseman Esa Orman and sophomore third baseman Santana Tamayo then both reached first base on errors.  After two outs sophomore shortstop Riley Zirkel placed the perfect bunt down the first base line to score Esa and push the Acalanes lead to 3-0 after a half inning of play.

The score held at 3-0 until the top of the 6th inning.  Riley came up again, and again bunted toward first base for a base hit.  Sophomore Gabby Huerta then reached on an error before senior centerfielder Emme came up and drilled a triple to left field to score Zirkel and Huerta. Emme had another solid game with 2 hits, 2 runs scored and 2 runs batted in.

Defensively third baseman Santana continued to flash the leather, making every play that came her way including an inning saving double play in the 3rd inning.  Senior second baseman Avery Robb made some nice plays as well including starting a key double play.  Freshman catcher June Natal also continued to look impressive behind the plate for the Dons.
