Varsity Girls Lacrosse Battles Despite Challenging Early Season Schedule

Welcome to week #2 of Varsity Girls Lacrosse! Through the first two weeks, the team has had perhaps one of the most difficult opening schedules in school history. Their first four opponents included a 4-0 Amador Valley team ranked #37 in California last year, a 2-0 San Marin team ranked #15, a 2-1 Monte Vista team ranked #27, and most recently a 2-0 Carondelet team ranked #20.

On Tuesday, the team hit the road to take on the aforementioned Monte Vista Mustangs. Junior Charlotte Gellman and Sophomore Grace Colaco led the team with 2 goals each, and Junior Emily Roberts and Sophomore Stella Hamilton also scored goals. Stella led the team with 2 assists. Junior Christina Hageboeck and Sophomores Grace Colaco and Grace Eppinger also recorded assists. Grace Colaco and Stella led the team with 3 draw controls, with Senior Lucca DeBiasse, Junior Maya Stafford, and Grace Eppinger also winning one draw control each. Junior goalie Sara Hession worked hard with 9 saves on the night. In the end, the Dons lost 14-6.

The Dons returned home on Friday night to face the Carondelet Cougars. The scoring for the Dons was spread out in this game as Seniors Lucca DeBiasse and Campbell Evans, and Juniors Charlotte Gellman, Maya Stafford, and Emily Roberts each chipped in a goal. Lucca’s goal came as she won the draw, took the ball all the way downfield, and scored unassisted. Sophomore Grace Colaco registered 3 of the 4 assists for the game, with the last assist coming courtesy of Junior Reese Imrie. Lucca DeBiasse and Grace Colaco each registered 2 draw controls, with additional draw controls coming from Reese Imrie, Grace Eppinger, and Stella Hamilton. On the defensive end, Senior Claire Zimmerman had a few nice shot deflections and long runs downfield. Junior goalie Sara Hession had 6 saves. The Dons lost 15-5.

Despite the difficult games, the team has fought hard throughout and made steady improvements over the course of the young season.  In the most recent game against Carondelet, the Dons outscored the Cougars 4-3 in the second half, which should provide good momentum heading into next week.  Go Dons!
