Men’s Varsity Lax Tops Alhambra, 15-5

The Acalanes Dons Varsity men’s lacrosse team travelled to Martinez for a Friday night showdown, emerging victorious over Alhambra, 15-5. The game began with a flurry of offensive pressure from the Dons, but Alhambra’s goalie showcased exceptional skill particularly in the early minutes denying numerous scoring opportunities. The Dons’ resilience paid off when Brody Darin found the back of the net, assisted by Simon Appel, at the seven-minute mark of the first quarter. Soon after, sophomores Andrew Iams and Caleb Mason connected for another Dons goal, putting Acalanes up 2-0 at the end of the first.

Alhambra responded with a goal early in the second quarter, but Jan Korzeniowski, assisted by Simon Appel, quickly restored the Dons’ advantage. Alhambra managed another goal, but Simon Appel once again set up Brody Darin for a score.

The Dons welcomed back sophomore Grant Condy after healing from a broken wrist, who made an immediate impact with a left-handed strike and several key defensive plays. Mason Lanphere had a nice score and Jan Korzeniowski, put his second of the night into the net, to add to the Dons’ tally. Korzeniowski then assisted Brody Darin for his second goal just before half. Senior Val Grossi’s strong goaltending helped Acalanes secure a 9-3 lead at halftime.

Quickly into the second half, Griffin Rotundo assisted Caleb Mason for the opening goal and Grady Evans added a powerful strike, followed up by Simon Appel’s goal to push the Dons’ lead to 12-3. As the Dons’ lead grew the Alhambra Bulldogs played with increasing aggression resulting in 8 penalties and several minutes in the box. David Gallacher’s hustle and speed were evident in the second half, with numerous loose ball recoveries and forced turnovers. And JB Frolich’s physicality kept the Bulldogs offense in check along with outstanding goalie defense from Kyle Sanftner in the second half.

Brody Darin then assisted Luke Dafferner for a goal. Alhambra scored once more, but Luke Dafferner added another goal, and Grant Condy, assisted by Andrew Iams scored his second for the night. Senior Nathan Ricci closed out the final minutes in the goal and the Dons sealed their 15-5 victory.
