Today, the Dons played the second of four interleague matches. Our opponent was College Park who is in a rebuilding year. This allowed me to rotate some of our lower ranked varsity players into the lineup. #1 Sze Ting Chen and #3 Peyton Eagens were rested and #6 Saaj Shah is nursing an injured knee. Therefore, Chase Belhumeur, Billy O’Brien and Nolan Roberts stepped in. The overall team result was a 9-0 sweep. None of the lines dropped a set and most of those were one-sided. That being the case, I’m not seeing value in fully analyzing the match. The scores below speak for themselves. I will, however, take this opportunity to highlight a few team members.
O’Brien played #6 singles today and won his first varsity singles match defeating Martin Todd 6-4, 6-4. They were evenly matched and it was easily the closest match of the day. Billy played a consistent and smart match and deserved the nod. Belhumeur teamed up with Roberts in the #3 doubles spot and won that match 6-0, 6-0. Belhumeur has now won three varsity doubles matches with three different partners: Ristow, Goldwyn and Roberts. Roberts has won back-to-back matches as he and Zheng won on Thursday in Benicia. It’s nice to see these guys getting a chance to play. They are the future of the team.
The other highlight is senior Dylan Rocca and junior Blake Marshall. Yes, today they won their 13th doubles match in a row as partners. What you may not know is they are both 14-0 on the season. Rocca is 1-0 in singles, and Marshall won a doubles match with Goldwyn. Keep on rolling boys – and I realize I could be jinxing the whole thing – but you both deserve the recognition.
On Thursday we are away at Las Lomas. And then we are really away next week as the boys have spring break – so coaches get a short well-deserved vacation too. It was a gorgeous day to watch tennis and our family members and school supporters were there to cheer us on. As always – thank you so much. Go Dons! Coach Rick
