Acalanes Swim Team Kicks off with Time Trials – Wednesday, 2/19/25

It was a BEAUTIFUL afternoon on Wednesday – sunny and warm – just perfect weather for a swim meet!  The Acalanes Swim Team held their time trials after school. This is the meet where swimmers can swim up to five races to get base times for entries into the competitive meets starting in March. Coach Brett and Coach RJ were also evaluating swimmers to decide who makes the Varsity and JV rosters to be announced on Friday, 2/21. 2025 brings us a fresh new crop of swimmers, and there is some real talent in this group!  I’m so excited about the season with the new energy and the fast times!

The meet kicked off at about 4:30pm with the Women’s 200 Freestyle – junior Ella Del Rosario led the way with a 2:04.53 (NCS Consideration cutoff is 2:05.99!), but juniors Olivia Whipple, Sara Williams, and Siena La Rotonda, as well as sophomore Avery Tanimura all went under 2:20. The Men’s 100 IM showcased two frosh in a tight race! Lachlan Tidd (1:09.88) just edged out Charlie Holmes (1:10.88) in an exciting swim!

Frosh ladies Malin Stone and Lily Briones burst onto the scene in the Women’s 200 IM with strong times of 2:23.92 and 2:32.77 respectively (NCS Consideration cutoff is 2:21.55).  The Men’s 200 IM was a Springbrook head-to-head between junior Mason Schlehr (2:18.80) and frosh Owen Andre (2:25.08).

The sprint races were next!  The Women’s 50 Free saw senior (and Vanderbilt-committed) Sadie Suppiger lead the field of 33 ladies with a 25.55 (NCS Consideration cutoff is 25.66), while frosh Lucy McShane finished second with 26.79, and sophomore Adelyn Horciza finished third with 26.86.  On the Men’s side, senior Jace Carter finished first with a 24.13 (NCS Consideration cutoff is 22.66), and a tie for second between Mason Schlehr and sophomore Andrew Tanimura at 24.33. Frosh Max Musch and Peter Endemann were close behind with 24.82 and 24.94 respectively!

In the Butterfly races, Ella Schlehr and Lachlan Tidd won the JV 50 yard races, and senior Ellie Budke and sophomore Will Miller won the Varsity 100 races. Ella Del Rosario led the 28 women who raced in the 100 Free with an NCS Consideration time of 55.73 (cutoff is 57.99), with Malin Stone and Sara Williams finishing 2nd and 3rd respectively. Max Musch won the men’s race in 55:80, with frosh Gavin Barclay taking second in 56.33 and Mason Schlehr in third with 56.46.

Olivia Whipple won the women’s 500 free, while sophomore Graham Maroney won the men’s race! Malin Stone won the women’s 100 back, and Mason Schlehr won the men’s 100 back.  Junior Audrey Martin won the women’s 100 breast in 1:14.55 (NCS cutoff is 1:12.99) and sophomore Jayden Hwang won the men’s 100 breast in 1:11.18.

So exciting to see so many strong swims! They will only get faster throughout the season! Special shout out to sophomore Anna Motes who was not racing at time trials, but who got her name on the record board!  She is now the #5 All-Time Acalanes Women’s 100 Breaststroker! Great job Anna! Next meet is against Northgate on Tuesday, 3/11 at Acalanes.  GO DONS!
