Acalanes Rugby Club Falls to Reigning Champions De La Salle in Hard-Fought Battle

Acalanes suffered their first defeat of the season on February 2, 2025, falling 24-7 to reigning NorCal champions De La Salle in a physical contest played in atrocious weather. Despite a depleted squad and several players forced into unfamiliar positions, Acalanes battled hard against one of the state’s premier teams.

With only 18 players available, injuries forced key adjustments. Freshman Graham Welton, normally a tight-five forward, stepped in at No. 8 and put in a tireless performance to earn Forward of the Match honors. Junior Bryce Birdsong, typically an open-side flanker, filled in at inside center, showing his versatility against De La Salle’s powerful midfield.

Fly-half Thomas Parrott led from the front, scoring all of Acalanes’ points with a well-taken try and conversion. His defensive work and game management under pressure earned him Man of the Match. At fullback, freshman Joaquin Bordi was tested relentlessly by De La Salle’s kicking game but stood strong under the high ball, earning Back of the Match for his courageous performance.

In the front row, freshman Matei Bolata (#1) and sophomore Caleb Birmingham (#3) made their debuts as props, stepping up admirably against a bigger and more experienced De La Salle pack. The pair even managed to win a few scrums against the head, an impressive feat for young props.

Though the result didn’t go their way, Acalanes showed resilience and determination. With key lessons learned, they will look to bounce back in their next fixture.
