Girls Varsity Basketball With a Big Road Win At St Mary’s Stockton

The girls hit the road to Stockton Saturday to face what traditionally has been a National power in the St Mary’s Rams.  While the Rams record coming in was 8-7, they had played an extremely tough schedule including a trip to Arizona to compete in the Nike TOC.  The Rams also came in ranked Top 25 in the State by CalHiSports.

After some back and forth action early on, our girls begun to create separation and ended the first quarter up 20 to 13.  That separation continued in the 2nd quarter despite foul trouble.  At the half the lead was 32 to 21 Dons.  The lead would grow to 14 in the 3rd quarter, however, St Mary’s would not go away.  It was 46 to 35 at the end of the 3rd.  The combination of foul trouble and a very gritty opponent made for a barnburner of a 4th quarter.  Our girls held on for a 59 to 52 victory.  The backcourt duo of Ariana Hallstrom (20 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists) and KK Lacanlale (17 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists) was spectacular all game.  Both girls stepped up in a major way and handled the Rams’ intense full court pressure while also playing outstanding D of their own.  Also notable was two huge plays by Lexi Le in the 4th quarter right when it appeared St Mary’s would make a run.  Sophie Chinn was a monster on the boards with 10 rebounds and outstanding defense all game long.

This was a solid road win for the girls battling a hostile environment, foul trouble and down one starter for the game due to injury.  Next up is back to league play with Las Lomas tonight and at Northgate Wednesday.
