The Acalanes High School (Dons Rugby Club) pulled off an unexpected 28-21 victory over Bishop O’Dowd in their first-ever rugby season. Playing in front of a lively crowd for their inaugural home match, the Dons showcased determination and resilience in a tightly contested game.
Acalanes took an early lead with tries from freshman #8 Sean Tandler (Forward of the Match) and sophomore #12 Danny Dunne, but Bishop O’Dowd stayed within reach through the brilliance of senior #13 Elliot Lewis and sophomore #12 OC Lehner. The pair scored three tries between them, with Lewis converting all three to level the game late in the second half.
Man of the match Bryce Birdsong (junior #7) delivered a defensive masterclass, limiting Lewis and Lehner’s impact. With the scores tied, freshman #15 Joaquin Bordi powered over the line in the final minute to seal the victory. Junior #10 Thomas Parrott, who also scored a try, converted all four Acalanes scores with precision.
The Dons hope to continue their run with another home match vs De La Salle, 12pm Kick Off on Sunday 2/2 at Acalanes Football Field.
