Bay Area Basketball Community Gather to Celebrate the Life of John Rhodes

From December 5 to December 7, 2024, eight Bay Area JV basketball teams will compete in a tournament to honor the life of John Rhodes.

John Rhodes was born on February 5, 1984. He grew up in Lafayette and attended Happy Valley Elementary School, Stanley Middle School, and Acalanes High School. John loved basketball, and his 8th grade team won the CYO championship. At Acalanes High School, John grew to be an outstanding 6’5” forward and showcased his talents for the varsity team during his junior year and senior years.

Sadly, John was taken from us on April 5, 2022, two months before he was to graduate from Acalanes High School. John planned to attend UC Berkley and participate in its renowned crew program. His sudden passing shocked our local community. John was both well-known and well liked. His Acalanes friends, as well as many of his former competitors, attended his funeral.
It was John’s love for the game that inspired us to rename the annual Acalanes JV Tournament- The John Rhodes Memorial Tournament. It is our hope that the player that participates in our tournament honors John by displaying passion, hard work, and sportsmanship.
