The 2024 NCS playoffs began with a bang as Varsity Football showcased why they have been a force this season. After a successful regular season, the new NCS playoff formulas moved Acalanes up to Division 3—a well-deserved jump considering the diluted competition in Division 5 this postseason.

From the opening kickoff, the Dons dominated the game, ultimately winning 42-13 against the Dublin Gaels. Despite holding the ball for just a fraction of the game, the Dons capitalized on big plays, explosive offense, and a relentless defense against the Gaels. The Dons only held possession for a little over 12 minutes, but turned each opportunity into a scoring threat. In stark contrast, the Gaels controlled the ball for over 35 minutes, but couldn’t match Acalanes’ efficiency.

On offense, QB Tyler Winkles (#6) returned after missing the previous game, He was the driving force behind the Dons’ offensive success, with 7 of 9 completions (78%), 197 passing yards and 3 passing TDs.  RB Josh Elerts (#89) also had an outstanding game with 136 all-purpose yards including 106 rushing yards, one rushing TD, and one receiving TD. 

Grant Ricker (#19) and David Gonzales (#1) each caught a 60+ yard touchdown pass, showcasing the Dons’ explosive air attack. 

Tommy Terhar (#3) scored his first touchdown of the season with a powerful 1-yard run.

On Defense, Drew McKenzie (#62), Jack Cooney (#58), and Bethel Imasuen (#65) combined for 7 sacks, resulting in a loss of 52 yards for the Gaels.

Interceptions by Finn Rivera (#13) and David Roux (#23) halted two critical Dublin drives.

Special teams also played a crucial role in the win. Bethel Imasuen (#65) blocked a punt, which Roux (#23) recovered for a touchdown, marking a key momentum shift.  River Lockwood (#12) blocked an extra-point attempt, preventing Dublin from gaining any momentum. Santi Vignoles (#42) was a perfect 6-6 on PATs, pushing his season total to 52 makes on 53 attempts. 

With this dominant performance, the Dons have solidified their status as a formidable contender in Division 3. Next up, they face Heritage High School in the NCS semi-finals—a matchup that carries historical significance. The two teams have only met twice in their history, with the most recent encounter occurring in 2016 when the Dons lost 28-14. This will be their first playoff showdown, and both teams are eager to make their mark.

While Heritage will bring their best to the field, the Dons are ready to capitalize on their momentum from the Dublin game. If the team continues to play with this level of efficiency, explosiveness, and defensive prowess, they will be poised to dominate once again and punch their ticket to a spot in the NCS finals.
