The Lady Dons Flag Football Team saved its best for last!
Playing its final regular season game against Berean Christian, who defeated us three weeks earlier 24-0, the Dons came to play as a more experienced and more prepared team, that is just plain better having grown exponentially over the past few weeks, and we dominated the game from start to finish, ultimately prevailing over Berean 33-10 and earning a birth in the DAL Playoffs.
The entire team played well, as they did in an earlier in the evening close game loss to College Park, with a several standout performances and statistical milestones. First, the Seniors showed up big! Sydney Clarke had her best catch of the year for a critical 9-yard gain, Romi Avrhami had a key sack stalling a BC drive, Leila Hamidi led the team with 6 tackles and an interception, Haley Chelemedos, out with injury, doled out key advice and QB Hana Chelemedos had her best night of the season, going 17 for 23, for 245 yards, 4 touchdowns and 3 extra points. All four touchdowns against Berean were thrown to team receiving leader Maya Shoenhair who had 11 receptions for 170 yards, four touchdowns and two extra points against Berean and 15 receptions for 222 yards to go along with 6 tackles on the night as Chelemedos went 29-39 for 356 yards and 5 touchdowns to go along with 9 carries for 68 yards.
Other highlights for the evening included another impressive night from freshman Isabelle Agnost who had 27 carries for 165 yards and 4 receptions for 32 yards, and great nights from Sophomores Avery DeMent who had 10 tackles and 2 receptions, and Ines Coyne who had 7 tackles and three receptions, and Junior Lily Cervenka’s thrilling interception from a tipped ball that she scrambled to get before it hit the ground.
For the season some huge milestones were also achieved. Agnost has accumulated1,230 all-purpose yards, Shoenhair 978 receiving yards to go along with 48 tackles, Chelemedos 2,578 total yards (2,163 passing yards and 424 rushing yards), Ines Coyne 79 tackles, Avery DeMent 74 tackles and Leila Hamidi 58 tackles. The defense for the Dons was outstanding, leading the league in fewest points scored against, a mere 143 points over 17 games.
A great year by any measure and a very successful rebuilding year considering the number of graduating seniors from last year’s DAL Champion Dons team.
