Game 1 – vs Miramonte, Wed. 10/9, 7pm
The JV Girls Water Polo team was busy last week, with a Wednesday game against Miramonte and two games on Saturday, one against the super tough Carondelet Frosh/Soph team and another against Leland High School.
Not much to report about the beginning of the Miramonte game unfortunately – the girls fought bravely but were down 5-0 at the end of the first quarter. In Q2, goalie Mave McAlister blocked a shot, and Emi Kuniyoshi’s shot was blocked, 9-0 at the half.
In Q3 though, the Dons came alive – Jess Gerhardt won the sprint, Kylie Kaplan scored through traffic (9-1), Sadie Hendrickson blocked a shot, Kylie’s shot went off the goal post, Santana Tamayo blocked a pass and stole the ball, Santana’s shot was blocked, as were Erin Lerch’s and Cade McAlister’s shots. Audrey Martin took a skip shot that was short, Mave blocked another shot, and their shot at the buzzer was blocked by Audrey, as Mave was out of the goal playing 7 on 6.
In Q4, Sadie’s shot was blocked, Kylie had a steal and a shot that went short, Jess had a beautiful pool table-style shot that went off the post but went in (10-2), Emi blocked a pass and stole the ball, Lilah’s shot went off the goal post, Lily (playing goalie) blocked a shot, and Emi scored the final goal for the Dons to end the game 13-3.
Game 2 – vs. Carondelet Frosh/Soph team, Saturday 10/12, 10am
The Carondelet Frosh/Soph team is widely regarded as one of the best teams around – when we played them the first time, one of the parents told us that they usually win by 20 goals or more, so when we lost to them 15-3, that was the closest margin they had ever seen. So, a 13-2 loss actually seems like a win! Here’s how it all went down.
Q1 – Carondelet scored three times, Mave blocked two of their shots, Sadie, Amayel Guiro and Emi all had steals, and our one shot at goal was short.
Q2 – Jess won the sprint, Emi had a couple of beautiful steals and her shot unfortunately went high. Jess shot wide, as did another Don, 6-0 at the half.
Q3 – Mave blocked another shot, and Mave, Jess, Santana, Erin and Emi all had shots that were unfortunately blocked. 10-0 end of Q3.
Q4 – Acalanes played with their goalie out to start the quarter, and our goalie scored! Jess also scored, Cade had a block and a steal, and two more of our shots were blocked. Final 13-2.
Game 3 – vs. Leland, Saturday 10/12, 2pm
The third game against Lelend from San Jose was much more fun to watch! Our girls showed what they were capable of with a decisive 14-3 victory – much needed after the last two tough games.
Q1 – Jess won the sprint, Erin scored right away! Santana assist to Erin for another score (0-2), followed by an assist from Erin to Santana for a score (1-3). Emi and Jess also scored, Leland 1, Aca 5 at the end of Q1.
Q2 – Jess won the spring, Erin had a shot that went high, Lily scores (1-6)! Leland took a few shots that went high, Aca’s 5-meter shot went high as well. Lily saved a goal shot, Santana scored again, Leland 1, Aca 7 at the half.
Q3 – Audrey won the sprint, Mave with two blocks! Ella Schlehr scores off the goalie’s hands (1-8)! Sadie assist to Jess who scores (1-9)!
Q4 – Audrey won the sprint, Cade’s shot was short, Audrey scored on a breakaway (2-10)! Audrey blocked a pass, but they recover to have their shot go wide. Kelsey also scored on a breakaway (2-11)! Lily blocked two of their shots, Audrey assist to Mave who scored (3-12)! Cade scores (3-13), and assists to Ella who scored the final goal of the game (3-14)!
Next up for the girls is Northgate, at Northgate on Wednesday, 10/16 at 4pm. The girls then play in the Soquel NorCal Tournament on Friday, 10/18 and Saturday 10/19. First game is at 4:20pm against Castilleja School from Palo Alto. GO DONS!
