Girls Varsity Tennis Defeats College Park 8-1

The Girls Varsity Tennis team travelled to College Park on Thursday. The girls were originally supposed to play on Tuesday, but the match was postponed due to high temperatures. It was a bit like jumping out of the frying pan and into the fire as the temperature on Thursday also cracked 3 digits with no shade in sight for the players. Despite the heat, the team emerged with a 8-1 victory that was not without some tense moments.

Given the heat, all of the matches were played as a single pro set to 8 games. On the singles side, Aamena Shipchandler, Emily Roberts, and Kate Widmann all cruised to 8-2 victories at Line 1, Line 3, and Line 6 respectively. The excitement came at Line 4 and Line 5 singles. At Line 4, Grace Colaco was down 7-2, and stormed back to win the next 5 games and tiebreaker 7-1 to pull out the 8-7 victory. At Line 5, Sienna Moise was down a triple match point before fighting back to also win 8-7 after taking the tiebreaker 7-3. Grace and Sienna were named players of the match.

On the doubles side, Sadie Moise and Hetty Lofting won Line 1 by a score of 8-4 against two girls who normally play singles. Jadith Labonge and Tatum McElhattan won Line 2 by a score of 8-3, and Audrey Parkin and Hanna Wisniewska won Line 3 by a score of 8-2.

Get to Know Coach: Coach Langtry’s favorite band is Boy Genius, an American Indie Rock “Supergroup”. For those of you like me who don’t know what a Supergroup is, it is a band formed by members who are already successful as solo artists or members of other successful bands. Other examples include Three Tenors (Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo, Jose Carreras), Bell Biv DeVoe (Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, and Ronnie DeVoe), and my personal favorite, Temple of the Dog (Eddie Vedder and Chris Cornell).
