JV Girls Water Polo Cages the Carondelet Cougars in their House!

What a scorcher it was on Tuesday night – in and out of the pool!  It’s always a treat to trek out to the Coughlin Aquatics Complex – what a beautiful facility.  These teams know each other well – there are a lot of friendships across these teams, so the energy was high, and the JV girls were pumped after the Varsity nail-biting win that had just occurred!

Jess Gerhardt won the sprint to start the game, but Carondelet scored first. We hit back with two quick goals, one by Sadie Hendrickson. Kylie Kaplan had a shot that was blocked, but Santana Tamayo picked up that rebound and scored, taking us up 3-1.  Santana was soon called out for a penalty, but Lucy McShane blocked the shot by Carondelet on the power play!  More on Lucy later.  Finishing out the first quarter, Carondelet scored another goal, and Lilah Kring’s shot was blocked.  Aca 3, Carondelet 2.

Jess won the spring AGAIN to start Q2! This quarter would be defined by the work BLOCK. It’s all Lucy McShane does- four times this quarter alone, one on a power play again, and another block where it was one-on-one with the other player!  Just amazing.  Unfortunately, Erin Lerch’s 5-meter shot was also blocked, as well as a couple of other shots we had, but Sadie Hendrickson had a good steal, and Kylie Kaplan scored near the half to put the Dons up 4-2.

Carondelet won the sprint to start the 3rd quarter, and the Dons lost Santana Tamayo for the rest of the game. Losing one of the strongest players hurt, but the team kept momentum going.  No scores this quarter – but a lot of shots that were blocked or bounced off the posts.

Caro won the sprint for Q4 (which happens when the ball is dropped early and floats toward that team) but then scored on themselves on our behalf – how kind!  Dons up 5-2. They scored again for themselves this time, Dons 5-3. Kylie took a shot that went high, but Sadie scored a goal to bring the Dons to 6-3. The rest of the game was the Lucy McShane Blocking Master Class – five blocks, one of which was a one-on-one.  NOTHING gets by Lucy!  Final score Dons 6, Cougars 3.

Next up is the Soquel Tournament this weekend.  Stay tuned!  Go Dons!
