Varsity Baseball Keeps Rolling!

The Varsity Baseball team stayed smoking hot with a tidy 7-2 win against the San Leandro Pirates on a beautiful Monday for baseball. The win puts the Dons in the Championship game of the Concord Classic Wednesday at 4:30pm at Concord High School against the Vintage Crushers. Coach Hornsby has his squad playing hard nosed, efficient baseball every time they step on the field.

Mason Zirkel took the mound for the boys and went 5 innings, giving up 3 hits, 2 walks and no earned runs while striking out 3 Crushers in an efficient 73 pitch outing. He looked calm and comfortable all game.

Zirkel was replaced briefly by Hank Bauer in the 6th, before Hank left with an arm injury. ‘Rubberarm” Peter Thorn was ready, as usual. Peter faced 3 batters and struck out 2 in his 7th appearance of the year.

Lefty Jack Giogianni finished things off on the hill for the Dons. He gave up a hit and a run before striking out the last batter of the game to seal the victory and push the boys undefeated record to 13-0.

Offensively Acalanes was led by second baseman Keegan Goddard with 2 hits, including a triple, 2 runs scored, a stolen base and an RBI. First baseman Sully Bailey also had a strong game with 2 hits, a stolen base and 2 RBIs.

The Dons scored one in the 1st inning after Keegan’s triple and a single from Bailey. They added another 2 runs in the 2nd frame after third baseman Everett Glass singled, center fielder David Gonzales doubled to score Glass and Goddard hit a sacrifice fly to score Gonzo and give the boys a 3-0 lead.

The Acalanes scoring continued in the 6th inning when left fielder Drew Asadorian doubled down the right field line to score right fielder Ando Butler and shortstop James Stadt. Drew advanced to 3rd base on the throw home before Mason Zirkel hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to plate Asadorian and push the Don’s edge to 6-1.

Keegan led off the top of the 7th with his second hit of the day and eventually scored on Sully Bailey’s second hit of the day to increase the boy’s advantage to 7-1. The Pirates added a meaningless run in the bottom of the 7th to make the final tally 7-2 in favor of the Acalanes 9.

The boys are currently ranked #4 in the SF Metro by Max Preps and #3 by West Coast Preps. These are good times for this talented crew. Take the drive to Concord on Wednesday to see their last out of league contest before league play starts next week against Northgate.

Stay hot boys. Go Dons!
