Slim margin again slips away in the bottom of the seventh, this time at College Park.
Another nice spring day. Another road game against a team of similar ilk. Another strong outing by a starting pitcher. Another game with an isolated single-inning of scoring for the Dons, in fact both games featuring 3-run fourth innings by the Dons. Another game with not enough insurance runs added after a lead found its way to the Acalanes dugout. Another game with only five hits. And, another game watching an opponent spill out of their dugout to celebrate a win.
Just as A.J. Hastings had pitched well on Monday afternoon, Gavin Beers left the game nursing a 3-2 lead after five innings. Beers allowed just two hits, walked two, and struck out six. He was relieved by Brendan Miles, who teamed up with his infielders to quickly get two outs on the basepaths, as the Falcons got a little too eager to tie it up or claim the lead. The only hit Miles surrendered unfortunately came on a deep fly ball to left field once the bases had been loaded in the bottom of the seventh due to the Dons accidental charity.
Reid Martin had two hits to lead the Dons while he manned first base. Cody Michlitsch, Jasper Stewart, and left fielder Paul Bacon, on a call up from the freshman squad, had the team’s other hits.
The Dons three-run fourth inning featured them batting around, scoring three runs on just one hit, Martin’s RBI single on the sixth straight curveball of his at bat, as well as a couple of College Park errors, two dropped third strikes, and a couple of passed balls.
The Dons now host the Falcons on Thursday at Ken Souza Field.
