It was a picture perfect night as the Girls Varsity Lacrosse team took on the Granada Matadors. Actually it was cold, windy, and raining, and yet a strong contingent of fans still made the trek down to Livermore to watch the team fight through the elements. Acknowledging the weather, the announcer played Singin’ in the Rain, made famous in the 1952 movie with Gene Kelly. The inclement conditions led to some off target passes, more balls on the ground than usual, and big sprays of water when the ball found the stick pockets, but the girls still managed to cruise to a 14-3 victory.
The Dons got on the board early courtesy of a goal from Ella Thomason off an errant toss from the Granada goalie. From there, the scoring parade continued, as Campbell Evans scored the second goal, Grace Imrie scored on a penalty shot, and Ella scored again on a nice shot coming from behind the net. Grace Colaco then corralled the ball off the draw and ran downfield to pass to Emily Roberts for a goal, and then Ella found Grace Colaco on a nice pass for a goal, putting the Dons up 6-0 at the end of the first quarter.
With the comfortable lead, the coaches mixed up the lineup a bit. Senior Grace Imrie turned over the reigns of the draw to her Sophomore sister Reese Imrie, who did a great job keeping the momentum going for the Dons. Ella scored again, Reese Imrie scored on a nice bounce shot, and Stella Hamilton scored. Although Granada managed to score in the quarter, goalie Addie Martin continued her excellent play, including a nice save on a penalty shot.
In the third quarter, the the team kept rolling. Defender Reese Tierney had several good steals and long runs downfield. Campbell Evans scored twice in the quarter, as did Catalina Liu, including one on a play where she reached over the goalie to find the back of the net. Grace Colaco scored the last goal of the quarter, in what turned out to be the last goal of the game for the Dons. Granada managed to score once in the quarter off a bounce shot.
In the fourth quarter, there was only 1 goal scored, a nice backhand shot by Granada. A couple memorable moments for the Dons included a play where midfielder Jenna Steele got knocked over and her goggles went flying off, but she got right back up and kept playing, and another where Catalina Liu accidentally knocked over a Matador player and proceeded to say that she was sorry. Good sportsmanship is alive and well at Acalanes!
The Dons next game is on the road on Wednesday at 7pmĀ against Piedmont
