The Varsity Baseball team took on one of their local rivals on Thursday at home and walked away with a tight 1-0 win to push their undefeated record to 11-0. Senior hurler Peter Thorn threw a complete game no hitter with some absolutely filthy pitches that had Matador hitters guessing all game. He gave up no hits, a walk, a hit batsman and no runs while striking out 7 in 7 dominating innings.
It was another happy handshake line for the Dons after the victory. The torrid start to the season has seen Coach Hornsby push all of the right buttons with this talented squad for the first 11 games of the year.
The defense was once again superb. The infield made several outstanding plays, led by “Big Game James” Stadt who was picking balls clean all day long at shortstop. Stadt is also leading the team in batting average and runs scored. He is having a great season.
The Dons offense was only able to scratch out 4 hits against some tough Miramonte pitching. First baseman Sully Baily, third baseman Gavin Bender, second baseman Mason Zirkel and right fielder David Gonzales each had a hit. Gonzo also added 4 stolen bases to his team leading total of 13.
The only run of the game was scored by Mason Zirkel. With one out in the bottom of the 2nd Mason smoked a towering drive into the swirling wind and over the left fielders head for a double. He reached 3rd base on a wild pitch and scored on a second wild pitch to give the boys in blue a 1-0 lead that they would not relinquish.
Catcher Benji O’Rourke called a solid game for the Dons and kept Thorn calm and in his groove for the entire contest. Peter threw 85 pitches for the day with 53 of them finding the strike zone.
With a runner on 2nd and the game on the line with 2 outs and a 3-2 count in the bottom of the 7th, Thorn closed the deal! He struck out the last hitter before a wild celebration ensued. Peter was a little fired up about his impressive performance.
The Dons now head to the Concord Classic. The Classic is a local Spring Break tournament that features several area teams including Miramonte and Campo. The boys play their first game today at 2pm against the Antioch Panthers, weather permitting. They will also have games next week on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Come out to see these guys play. They are the real deal!
Stay Hot Dons!!!
