The Varsity Baseball team notched another win on Wednesday on a warm Spring afternoon in Lafayette. The boys improved their record to 8-0 with a runaway victory over the Piedmont Highlanders in front of another lively home crowd. The student turnout has been outstanding! The Dons offense kicked in after Piedmont tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the 4th. Acalanes put up 3 runs in the bottom of the 4th and 6 runs in the bottom of the 5th to extend their lead to 10-1 after 5 completed frames.
The Dons pounded out 10 hits and were led by first baseman Sully Bailey with 3 hits, 2 stolen bases and 1 RBI, and catcher Benji O’Rourke with 2 hits and 3 RBIs.
Centerfielder Keegan Goddard had a hit with 2 RBIs, a run scored and a stolen base, and third baseman Gavin Bender slammed his first home run of the year deep over the left field fence in the 6 run 5th inning.
Lefty Henry Souza started on the bump for the boys and went 3.1 innings, giving up 4 hits, 2 walks and no earned runs, while recording 3 strikeouts. He was relieved by Peter “Rubberarm” Thorn in the 4th inning. Peter pitched a clean 4th and 5th inning. He did not allow a base runner and he struck out one Highlander in his 5th appearance of the season.
Junior Brady Quinn made his first appearance of the year and pitched the final two innings for the boys. Brady gave up 3 hits, 2 walks and 1 earned run in his outing to seal the 10-3 win.
The Dons take on the San Leandro Pirates on Thursday afternoon. Hopefully the boys stay hot. Baseball is one of our few Division 1 sports at Acalanes. Right now the boys are ranked #14 in the state and #4 in the San Francisco Metro. Pretty impressive. Let’s Go Dons!
