Gavin Beers picked up the win Tuesday evening at James Logan, pitching deftly out of loaded bases in the first inning, and two on in the second, coasting the rest of the way through six innings of work, repeatedly sending Colts hitters staggering and teetering back to the dugout. However, a few hours prior, such a story seemed impossible, as his teammates began receiving his texts as they commuted down the 680 to Union City. A la Kevin in Home Alone, Gavin had been so dedicated to his classwork that he had taken his early release for a road game not-so early and was left behind. About to be scratched from his start, calls were made, a nixle alert was pondered, and an obvious solution to the predicament arose: 5-star rated superfan Jane Smith nabbed Beers and hurried him to the game.
A 2-RBI double by first baseman Reid Martin in the second, scoring Tommy Terhar and David Roux, was all Beers would have needed on a day when he was cruising and his defense played well behind him. The lead was up to four in the third as a double by third baseman Jimmy Cusumano, an RBI groundout by Cody Michlitsch, and a delayed double steal, performed to perfection by Terhar and Jasper Stewart, brought two more runs home.
The Dons got to the James Logan bullpen as the afternoon turned to evening, scoring four more times in the fifth and once more in the sixth. Shortstop Tyler Winkles didn’t crap out when he came to the plate in the fifth, as his second double plated two more Dons. The 9th and final Dons’ run came as Tommy Terhar, who had reached base by walk for the third time, was Tommy being Tommy, as a stolen base and a dash from second on Kyle Woodson’s single brought him home. Terhar had three walks, two stolen bases, and two runs scored on the day. Beers ended his day after six innings, scattering five hits, awarding a lone walk, and striking out two before Austin McManamon was summoned to pitch the seventh and predictably sent the Colts home with 10 pitches.
The JV squad now travels to Piedmont for a Wednesday afternoon game and then returns home to host San Leandro on Thursday at Acalanes’ Ken Souza Field, where there will be free admission to all active military and seniors.
