The girls varsity lacrosse team went into their game Thursday night at home with an added mission – raising money to help find a cure for Mabry Syndrome. Before play began, the game was dedicated to The Landman Family and their daughter Lucy who was diagnosed with the rare disease at 10 months old. In collaboration with Lucy’s family and the organization Moonshots for Unicorns, the JV and Varsity teams aimed to raise $2,000 to contribute towards a clinical trial for a groundbreaking treatment that could potentially change the lives of Lucy and others battling PGAP3. At the time of this post they have exceeded their goal and have currently raised $2,699.50 so far! After a sweet dedication that involved posters in support of Lucy as well as a very cute stuffed animal Zebra, the team took the field ready to play the College Park Falcons.
The Dons took control of the game from the start and never looked back. Taking the early lead, Lucca DeBiasse scored off a penalty shot and then shortly after scored again off an assist from Grace Imrie. Grace Imrie picked up from there scoring two penalty shots in a row. Our defense was solid against the Falcons attack, with Avery Ives and Reese Tierney getting their bodies and sticks in the way to prevent penalty shots and Addie Martin blocking goals. In the second quarter, Reese Imrie came in to take the draw and quickly ran the ball down field for a goal. While they were on a roll, the Dons suddenly found themselves down two players due to yellow cards. They rose to the challenge with the help of Jenna Steele on the draw and as soon as we were back to even our attack returned in full force. Catalina Liu came around the crease to score, followed shortly thereafter by Campbell Evans with two goals in a row. Before the half was up, Liu scored again on a penalty shot and Charlotte Gellman put one in the back of the net with the help of Reese Imrie with the assist. The Dons ended the half up 10-2.
The second half started right where they left off, with Liu scoring from around the crease. Each time the Falcons moved the ball to their attack, our defense quickly sent it back down to our offense. After settling the ball on offense, Maia Upp scored a goal adding to the Dons points. Liu found Ella Thomason open, made the assist and Thomason scored the goal. Next, the Dons deployed their secret weapon, Tierney, a defender who also knows how to attack, and sent her down field to score one for the team. Reese Imrie drove to the goal and found the back of the net with a great shot along with Steele who scored next off a well placed pick. The final goal of the night was a repeat of one we’d seen earlier in the game with Liu assisting Thomason for the goal. The Dons won the game with a final score of 17-4, a great way to go into Spring Break! The team will take some much needed rest this week and return for their next game on Tuesday, April 9 at 7pm against University High in San Francisco.
