Seems like we just finished the spring 2023 season. How fast the time goes. The Dons lost eight seniors last year, but this year we have picked up some improved players from our junior varsity farm as well as a talented new incoming freshman. We have a lot to look forward to this year. We also have a new assistant varsity coach in Peter Brightbill as well as the parents of our new players. Welcome to our tennis program.
When we started tryouts, there were 44 boys signed up. Upon completion, 17 were placed on varsity, 21 on junior varsity, and we unfortunately had to cut 6 others. Thank you to the coaches who spent time assessing the skills of each player and working collaboratively to properly disposition them: Coach Peter and JV coaches Gary Fiammengo and Lee Ann Gove.
This first week of practice was a little ambitious to start playing practice matches, but the boys were ready for action. As you will see in the scores below, most of our players were not all that challenged today. We’ll take the win, however, knowing we have more work to do preparing for the stronger teams in our league. It is nice to see the boys already building the strong bonds that have become customary at Acalanes. We just need to get the weather to cooperate now.
Because all of the scores were fairly decisive, I don’t feel the need to single out particular players as they all played well and got the job done. In nine lines, we only dropped one set. Congratulations to the team on getting out of the gate this season on a successful note.
