Record: 18-3
“We beat our two biggest rivals.” proclaimed super fan, Cindy Deily. The JV Basketball Team crushed its two local rivals, Campolindo and Miramonte, by a combined score of 124 to 81. With their 69 to 45 victory over Miramonte, the Dons are now 18-3 overall and undefeated in league play, 8-0.
The Dons started this game strong as AJ Hastings quickly took control of the game. The freshman point guard scored the first five Dons’ points. AJ then found Josh Elerts who got fouled. After Josh’s one free throw, it was 6-2. Lorenzo Cangini added a three pointer. Josh then scored the next eight points! The young center even scored a basket with two Matadors draped all over him. Josh couldn’t be stopped. Yet, the highlight of the quarter belonged to AJ. With time expiring, the youngest Don hit a very deep three pointer. Mr. Curry would be proud. The Dons led 22-7 after just one period.
The 2nd quarter now belongs to the Dons. The JV team utilizes this period to build an insurmountable lead that easily demoralizes their opponent. Chase Bahou opened the quarter with a basket. Bethel Imasuen quickly scored four points in a row. Two layups by Chase Bahou put the Dons ahead by sixteen points! Lorenzo then started to get hot. He hit two three pointers, including a buzzer beater, and had a layup with one. At halftime, the Dons were up 40-16.
Have yourself a game, Lorenzo Cangini. The young guard erupted for seventeen 3rd quarter points. Not only did he shoot perfectly from three-point range, but Lorenzo also easily drove by his defender when pressed. It was remarkable quarter for number 4. Deonte Littlejohn and Chase also contributed buckets. Still, it was Lorenzo’s quarter. The Dons led 61-26.
The last quarter was a bit sloppy for the home team. Several turnovers as well as lack of ball movement lead to a low scoring quarter. Landon Deily made a beautiful pass to Spencer Clark for a layup. Chase also had a nice layup. Landon then poured in four points! The Dons had beaten their Orinda rivals 69-45.
The star of the game, Lorenzo Cangini, had this to say about his team: “Our coach has improved. He is utilizing our talents and teaching us teamwork.” Lorenzo, who had a season high 28 points, further added: “That is what makes this team special. All of us are improving daily.”
The JV Basketball team homestead continues Friday, January 26, 2024. The Dons will play Ygnacio Valley. Tip-off is at 6:00pm. Fear the Blue!
