The 9th Annual Chris Huber Classic was a resounding success culminating in a very exciting Championship game against Monte Vista and Woodcreek from Roseville. The game was tied 51 all with under a minute left but the Mustangs prevailed 56-52, winning this one at the free throw line late.
Host Acalanes fell to Dougherty in the Third Place game. Piedmont took fifth over St. Joseph Notre Dame (SJND), and Alhambra beat DeAnza in the Seventh Place contest.
The MVP Honors went to Daniel Cojocaru of Monte Vista. All Tournament selections were: are very own Super Soph Gavin Dodge (Acalanes), Corbin Knight (Monte Vista), Will Dennie (Woodcreek), Chris Fallgren (Dougherty Valley), and Brit Burden (Piedmont).
The Chris Huber Awards are given to young men that made all those around them better. According to Coach Powers “by winning this award all the people in the locker room are better and the world needs more people like this.” The Huber recipients for this year were: the esteemed Jordan Brown (Acalanes), Jackson Alred (Alhambra), Marshun Leffall (DeAnza), Chris Fallgren (Dougherty Valley), Zavier Vincent (Monte Vista), Thorin Holmes (Piedmont), Zachary Lopez (SJND), and Cooper Cornelius (Woodcreek).
Special thanks to Sarah Brown and Tom and Debbie Krackeler for all their efforts in putting on a first class event. I spoke to several coaches and the overwhelming feedback was high praise and a desire to return next year.
Tonight at 7:30pm, the Dons open league play against Las Lomas in Walnut Creek. Believe it or not, the Dons have not beaten the Knights at their house since January 2010! Going to be a tough test for this young squad as we are still dealing with some key injuries and the Knights are expected to apply pressure all night long. Come on out and support your team. GO DONS!
