As drizzle fell intermittently throughout the San Francisco match, the Dons and Red Devils both struggled to get a clean shot on goal as each team displayed staunch defensive play. The Dons’ best scoring chance in the opening half came when sophomore midfielder, Omri Noiman, sent a long-distance laser at the Uni goal but it caromed off the crossbar. The Red Devils, an NCS D4 finalist last year, had the match’s best scoring opportunity late in the second half off an indirect kick in the penalty area but senior goalkeeper, Evan Sverak, rose up and deflected a hard shot over the crossbar to keep the match scoreless. Dons midfielder Colin Sohn and striker Ben Pecci continued to work hard to push the ball towards the Uni goal in the second half but couldn’t muster a score and the match ended as dusk approached in a 0-0 tie.
Earlier in the week, the Dons travelled to Concord to take on the De La Salle Spartans in a full-length scrimmage on their home turf. The Spartans jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first few minutes of the match but the Dons tightened up their defense with strong play by center backs Jonny Roth and Simon Appel to keep DLS scoreless the rest of the scrimmage. Zack Roder cut the lead in half with a nice header off a cross from Lucas Dissman late in the second half but the Spartans emerged with a 2-1 victory.
