DONS HOOPS FALLS TO DOUGHERTY VALLEY 69-49 TO FINISH FOURTH AT HUBER CLASSIC

The Dons were slow out of the gates again going down 12-1 before their first field goals with under a minute left as Ryder Malm found Gavin Dodge for three and Gavin put in a wild baseline shot as time expired to make the score 15-6 Dougherty after one.  The Dons were 2/10 from the field with 4 turnovers.

The Dons offense started clicking in the second going 4/7 but 6 turnovers limited our opportunities while Dougherty was an even better 7/11 and they were able to extend the lead to 35-15 at the half.

The lead ballooned to 23 multiple times in the third but the Dons would not go quietly and won the quarter, cutting the lead to 18 on a nice Cameron Hood to Ryder alleyoop layup at the buzzer.

Dougherty asserted themselves again and had their biggest lead of the night a 27 point cushion with just over 5 minutes left.  The Dons went on a 16-3 run over the next four minutes to cut the lead to 14 but there was just not enough time left in this one.  DV kept their foot on the gas and added some garbage time points for the 69-49 final.

The Dons shot 44% on the evening on 13/27 from 2FG (48%) and 6/16 on 3FG (38%).  DV shot 48% from the field going 18/34 on 2FG (53%) and 8/20 on 3FG (40%).  There were no glaring differences in most of the stats, they were just a little better than us at everything – 5 more made 2FG’s, 2 3FG’s, 5 free throws, 4 rebounds, 6 less turnovers (19 vs. 13), etc. but it just all added up to a lot together.

Gavin led the way again with 17 points on 6/11 shooting with 2 three’s, a team high 4 assists and 4 rebounds in 27 minutes.  Maddox Malm added 8 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists and a block in 21 minutes.  Ryder also had 8 on 4/4 shooting and 2 assists in 14 minutes.  Ian Salmon had team highs of 7 rebounds and a +/- of +4.

The Chris Huber Classic was a smashing success again this year and the overwhelming feedback was that it was a first class event.  Monte Vista ended up winning it all over Woodcreek 56-52 in a game that was tied with under a minute left and was decided at the free throw line in the final seconds.  Thank you to everyone for their help and support in pulling it off again!

Next up for the Dons is a short road trip to Walnut Creek to face Las Lomas this Tuesday, December 12th at 730pm. The Knights also had a similar sized loss to Dougherty so should be a good matchup. GO DONS!!!
