Acalanes took on Northgate High School in the Dons first home league game Friday night. On a warm evening the boys in blue absolutely steamrolled the Broncos to go 2-0 in league play and record their third consecutive win! The team has outscored opponents 160-13 in the last three games.
The atmosphere was electric and the band was fantastic. The support really put the boys in a great position to play free and feed off of the crowd’s energy. Hopefully we will see the band for every home game the rest of the season. The fans, the cheerleaders and the band make an Acalanes home football game truly special.
Collin Malmquist had a monster defensive game with 8 tackles, including 2 sacks. Chase Caicedo also had 2 sacks and Deonte Littlejohn and Jack Manful both added one. All told, Acalanes sacked the beleaguered Bronco quarterback 6 times. Gavin Bender returned at cornerback and had 4 defended passes to lead the team.
Jack Giorgianni, Jake Boselli, Everett Glass, Brady Wall, Walker Smith, Wyatt Cooper and the rest of the Dons swarming defense were all over the field. Northgate managed a late 4th quarter touchdown, which broke a streak of 11 quarters without giving up a touchdown. The Defense has been lethal!
Offensively, the Dons scored early and often, again. QB Sully Bailey found Trevor Rodgers and Henry Souza for a pair of 19 yard touchdown passes to give the boys a 13-0 lead at the end of the 1st quarter.
The 2nd quarter was more of the same. After a Northgate field goal the offense generated 3 rushing touchdowns to take control of the contest. Sully scored on two business like short runs from 4 and 5 yards out. Paul Kuhner scored on an electrifying 51 yard run down the sidelines. Paul seems to be recovered from his injury as he flashed his classic acceleration into the end zone. After another Northgate field goal the score was 35-6 at halftime.
The Dons did not slow down in the 2nd half. Bailey found Trevor Rodgers for his 2nd touchdown of the day to start the quarter. Jake Boselli came in at QB and promptly found Paul Kuhner on a 19 yard pass for Kuhner’s second score of the evening. He also connected with Mason Zirkel on a 39 yard bomb in the 4th quarter. The Acalanes quarterbacks combined to go 25-34 for 267 yards and 4 touchdowns. The offensive line (Henry Hagel, JD Orear, Brady Morrow, Drew Mckenzie, Andrew Tresser, and Danny Martin) had another solid game opening holes and protecting the QB.
Jack Giorgianni, Jack Miller, Deonte Littlejohn and Kuhner led the running attack as the Dons rushed for 154 yards on 20 carries. Mason Zirkel (5 catches for 73 yards) and Henry Souza (10 catches for 87 yards) led the receivers in yardage. Santi Vignoles was perfect again, going 3-3 kicking extra points.
The boys have another home game this week against league foe the Benicia High School Panthers. Let’s pack the stands for Homecoming and get off to a 3-0 start in league play on Friday night. This team has that look in their eye. Why not us?! Let’s Go Dons!!!
