Absolutely, it was a scorching day on the gridiron as the Dons clashed with their rivals in Walnut Creek. The sun blazed down, but the heat couldn’t deter these fierce competitors. The Dons traveled to take on the Berean Christian Eagles in the first game and Alhambra Bulldogs in the second game.
In the first game against the Eagles, Ella Thomason and Dakota Goyert were like a defensive wall, blocking and sacking their way to dominance. Then, the moment of magic arrived when Zoya Acuna‘s pass found Maya Shoenhair in the end zone, electrifying the crowd. But the Eagles fought back, sneaking in a late tip pass for a long touchdown just before halftime, keeping us all on the edge of our seats.
After a much-needed water break, the second half continued the defensive showdown. Berean was able to get the lead with a pick 6, but with just 34 seconds left, Monica Dikova bulldozed her way to a game-tying touchdown. Overtime was forced, and Goyert’s crucial sack gave us a glimmer of hope. Alas, the Eagles seized the moment, and the final score stood at 18-12. All the girls played their hearts out.
Yet, as the sun began to set, the Dons came roaring back for their second game. Team Captains, Jenna Steele, Addie Martin, and Goyert led the charge. Goyert’s early sack set the tone, and then Addie McShane unleashed an 80-yard sprint to the end zone, leaving everyone breathless.
The Don’s defense remained relentless, with Thompson batting down passes and the Dons intercepting their way to a 12-0 halftime lead. The energy stayed sky-high, as Acuna orchestrated another TD to Dikova. Not to be outdone, McShane snatched an interception for herself.
In the end, it was an 18-0 shutout win for the Dons, a testament to their unwavering determination and stifling defense. Both the Eagles nor Bulldogs barely saw a glimmer of offensive hope all day. Our defense had their best day of season.
