On Tuesday evening, the Acalanes Varsity Girls Volleyball team faced off against the visiting Cougars from Rancho Cotate out of Rohnert Park. Both teams came into the match, 0-2, so one team would be walking away with their first win of the season. Early on, in the first set, it looked like Rancho Cotate would be the team getting that first win of the season as they led 10-17. #17 Sophia Terry had a big kill with a great set by #11 Christina Hageboeck to change the momentum in the Dons favor. Sophia also contributed with great serves to continue the comeback. #7 MaeLin Mason had a monster kill and a killer serving ace to give the Dons the lead. #5 Mimi Maycock had a beautiful block to keep the lead as the Dons went on to win set #1, 25-20.
In set #2, Christina continued her awesome serves with 3 aces in a row to give our girls an early lead. #10 Annie Baker crushed a kill to keep the Cougars on their heels. #9 Piper Coy made her presence known with a kill on her first touch to increase our lead. #15 Rena Liu smoked a couple of serves to put Rancho Cotate away as the Dons won set #2, 25-16 going away.
With a game on the horizon on Wednesday, the Dons looked like they wanted to finish this matchup as quickly as possible. In set #3, #1 Jade Profilio, had a gorgeous ace that couldn’t be returned by the backline of Rancho Cotate. Piper had a well-timed block to earn the home team a point. After an amazing long rally, #13 Addi Ames, had a great kill to crush the spirit of the Cougars. #4 Mika Bocobo continued her trademark of well-placed serves to help increase the lead. Christina, from the setting position, had a kill, to really surprise the opposition. Jade finished off the set and match with an ace to give the Dons their first win of the season, 25-18.
