It was a tough week for Acalanes Varsity Baseball. The Dons took on the Campolindo Cougars on
Thursday at home and repeated a similar bad dream as Tuesday’s outcome. Solid pitching, decent hitting and a few let downs in defense were ultimately the story of both games. Hard to watch because defense has been so stellar all season.
Mason Zirkel started on the mound and like Henry Souza on Tuesday, pitched well enough to hope for a better result. Mason pitched 5 solid innings and gave up one earned run. Tyson Bates relieved Zirkel in the 6th and pitched 1 and 2/3 innings, also giving up one earned run. Logan Mikalis came in to get the final out in the 7th inning.
Offensively the Dons out hit the Cougars 7-6, with threatening baserunners many of the early innings. The boys were trailing 5-0 heading into the home half of the 7th , when Nico O’Rourke led off with a line drive to center for a base hit. Sammy Lee was then hit by a pitch, before Mason Michlitsch grounded out
to second on a controversial call at first base.
Andrew Habas followed with a single to knock in O’Rourke. Everett Glass up next, hit a single to right field to drive in pinch runner, and Varsity newcomer, David Gonzalez. Lead is trimmed 5-2. James Stadt then tried to reach on a bunt. It plated Habas, but James was out on a close play at first. That cut the Cougar lead to 5-3, and that’s as close as it would get.
The team will celebrate “Senior Night” on Tuesday at 4pm home game against Northgate High School. Come out and support the great seniors that have given the program 4 outstanding years of their time and energy. The Dons look to finish the final two games of the season strong against the Broncos.
