Playing against Campo in the DAL Championship game on Friday night was a tough assignment. Campo features multiple NCAA Division I commits, including their incredibly stingy goalkeeper, Haley Richards. The Cougars put their talents on display throughout the first half, outscoring the Dons 3-11. Unfortunately the Dons also lost star middie, Grace Imrie, to injury in the first half, making a difficult game even more challenging. But the Dons came out in the second half showing their character, playing with heart and grit, and never gave up. The Dons only allowed 5 goals in the second half and scored 5 of their own. The game ended with a final score of 8-16.
Scoring for the Dons were Maya Wang with three, and Tea Smith, Ella Thomason, Megan Churchill, Lucy Gellman and Haley Rurka each adding a goal of their own. Churchill, Rurka, Wang and Imrie were each credited with an assist during the game. An area of improvement for the Dons from the first time they played Campo this season was draw controls; the Dons were able to control half of the draws on Friday night. Imrie controlled four, Thomason had three, both Wang and Jenna Steele controlled two and Smith had one.
Next up for the Dons will be the first round of the North Coast Section championship. The Dons will host Head Royce on Tuesday at 5pm. Come to the game and support this terrific team. GoFan tickets will be required for admission. Let’s go Dons!
