The Dons were down to the last two league matches, both against the Northgate Broncos. On Friday, the Dons took the first contest by an overall score of 6-3. This gives us our eighth straight win and improves our league win-loss record to 8-1. This also guarantees us at least a tie for first place. A win on Tuesday against Northgate will give us sole ownership of the top spot. The other scenario for sole possession is if Miramonte beats Campo next week.
Current Standings
- Acalanes 8-1
- Campolindo 7-2
- Miramonte 6-3
- Northgate 5-4
It was an exciting day for Acalanes tennis. Spectators supporting both teams lined the fences and even Campo players showed up towards the latter part of the match. We knew Northgate was a formidable opponent and the tight scores demonstrated that. Four matches were decided by a third set super tiebreaker; both teams won two of them. When the six singles matches were completed, the overall score was a 3-3 tie. Toni, Brewer, and Reeder won their matches. The attention then shifted to the doubles teams. Both Acalanes and Northgate were looking for two wins to clinch the overall match. It was Acalanes though who swept all three lines. Brown and Hoeberechts again pulled off a clutch win giving the Dons a 4-3 lead (déjà vu from Tuesday’s match against Miramonte). Bonner and Cortez then won in a 10-7 third set tiebreaker giving the Dons their fifth and deciding win. Foster and Lofting finished right behind them with a 10-6 tiebreaker win to make the final tally 6-3.
The team celebrated with its ritual of jumping back on the courts and playing “touch the fence.” Everyone was excited and the players truly deserved and earned this honor. They worked hard in the off season and in our rain-affected practices during the spring. The coaches are extremely proud of each player. Those that didn’t play in the nine lines that counted were helping get the players warmed up and jumped from court to court cheering on their teammates. We also had no shortage of parents and family members – as usual. I’ll never stop thanking you for coming out to support us. It really does make the difference. One more to go – Northgate on Tuesday. Go Dons! Coach Rick
