The Dons traveled to picturesque Danville for what promised to be a competitive game against a talent-filled Monte Vista squad. The match up did not disappoint! The Dons and the Mustangs traded the lead back and forth in the first half with the Dons taking a 6-5 lead going into halftime. The Dons’ defense was stingy for most of the 2nd half and the Dons had control of the ball most of the time as well, but the Dons opened the door for the Mustangs a few times late in the game with some potentially costly turnovers, raising the blood pressure of the Dons’ fans and coaches. The Dons were able to regain their composure to finish the game with 8 goals for the Dons over 7 for the Mustangs, and a big DUB for Acalanes.
It was a full team effort on both sides of the ball. On offense, Maya Wang scored 4 goals on 5 shots, Megan Churchill scored 2, and both Tea Smith and Grace Imrie had one goal each. Churchill added 2 assists to her offensive effort with Smith and Ella Thomason each helping with one assist a piece. Loose balls were a team-wide endeavor with Smith, Wang, Imrie, Cate Condy, Kelly Todhunter, Lucy Gellman and Haley Rurka adding to the effort. Goalie Addie Martin made numerous, game-saving stops, saving 7 of 14 shots.
The Dons hope to ride the high of this big win straight into their next game on Friday at 7pm at Northgate High School. Come out and celebrate St. Patty’s Day by watching the Dons take on the Broncos! Go Dons!
