JV Baseball Stage Comeback to Knock Out Liberty Lions 8-5

In the classic 1990 LL Cool J Hip-Hop song “Mama Said Knock you Out”, there is a line where he sings “Don’t call it a comeback”. With all due respect to Mr. J, I am going to call the Dons erasing a 3 run deficit by scoring 6 runs in the last inning to pull out the victory over the Lions a comeback. In fact, I have to put this right up there with some other notable comebacks, including the Buffalo Bills coming back from a 32 point deficit to beat my hometown Houston Oilers in 1993 from which I still haven’t recovered, the Average Joe’s coming back to beat the Globo Gym Purple Cobras in Dodgeball, wrestler Hulk Hogan unfortunately coming back to help Peter Thiel take down Gawker, Ben Affleck coming back from Gigli, Brittani Spears coming back from her dad’s conservatorship and K-Fed (#FreeBritney), and me coming back to my dryer to find a missing sock.

Similar to the game against Vallejo, The Dons offense struggled early.  Through the first 6 innings, the Dons managed 2 runs on 3 hits.  All of that changed in a big way in the 7th inning.  Facing a new Lions pitcher, Brady Quinn, Henry Garbo, and Augie Martinez drew consecutive walks.  Austin Wampler stepped to the plate and hit a single driving in 1 run and David Gonzales hit a double driving in another 2 to tie the game.  The Lions brought in a new pitcher, but the Dons managed to score another 3 runs courtesy of a double by Cole Gwaltney and ground out by Dominic Patitucci.

The team finished the game with 6 hits, 3 coming from Cole, 2 from David, and 1 from Austin.

David Gonzales got the start on the mound.  He gave up 4 runs on 4 hits, 2 walks, and 1 HBP in 2 2/3 innings of work.  Brendan Miles came in as the middle reliever, giving up 1 run on 1 hit, 1 walk, and 1 HBP.  Brady Quinn came in to close, giving up no runs, hits, or walks in 2 innings.  He struck out the side in the 6th inning, and also had a 1-2-3 inning in the 7th to seal the victory.
